A year after the impressive Unreal Engine 5 demo, Epic Games reiterates how this engine will transform the way next-gen games are made. Let’s learn about the Nanite tool of UE5 in this article!

What is Nanite?
Epic has rolled out two major new UE5 innovations: Nanite, a new virtualized micro polygon technology that enables ultra-high-resolution content, and Lumen, a new real-time global lighting system. In a recent video, Epic pointed out more advantages that Nanite brings to developers.

Nanite is a tool that helps to render “virtualized micro polygon geometries”. It can automatically create many geometric details invisible to the naked eye. This means that cinematic-quality graphic items consisting of hundreds of millions or billions of microscopic polygons can be imported directly into the UE and fully processed. According to Epic, the tool will process data streams and make adjustments in real-time without any loss of quality.

This new type of technology will help developers to focus more on their expertise, for example, artists and designers can focus more on creating art without the need to pay too much attention to technical factors.
The Function of this New Tool of Unreal Engine 5
Nanite for artists is freedom. It means freedom of choice about what content you can use. Now you don’t have to worry about lower-resolution maps or proxies. You can load all the movie quality content directly into the engine and can use them in the game.

Really just pull it in and that’s awesome!
We’re talking about an entire scene made up of trillions of triangles. Artists can create artwork in whatever makes the most sense to them, import that content, and let the engine handle the details.
In the past, artists would start with really high-resolution content and convert it to a low-resolution model and make a normal map out of it. We don’t have to take that step anymore and it’s all done by Nanite.

What Nanite technology opens up is to really liberate artists so they can fulfill their vision.
Epic is working closely with console manufacturers like Sony and Microsoft to ensure first-party developers can get the most out of the new engine on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X hardware.
In particular, Sony has invested $450 million directly in Epic Games to help further develop this technology.

Conclusion
Although Unreal Engine 5 has only been out for a little over a year, many artists have already begun to use it to streamline their workflows. Nanite allows you to create huge, complicated procedural objects and sceneries that you can open in Unreal Engine 5, and it will take care of a few things to ensure that the game plays smoothly.
