Crafting Realistic Water Effects
One of the most challenging tasks was recreating water digitally. Jaramillo explains that water is so familiar to the human eye that even minor inaccuracies stand out.
The team conducted extensive simulation tests to capture the reflective and dynamic nature of water under various environmental conditions.
The process involved tweaking the speed, flow, and intensity of the river on a shot-by-shot basis to meet Costner’s vision.
Mastering Skies and Storms in Horizon: An American Saga
The skies played a crucial role in evoking the vast landscapes of classic Westerns. Jaramillo’s team often had to replace blank skies with stunning vistas to enhance the film’s natural beauty.
Balancing elements like rain, storm clouds, and lightning was another challenge, with the compositing team ensuring the right intensity to convey the peril faced by the settlers.
Transforming Day into Night in Horizon: An American Saga
A key sequence involved a horse chase shot during the day but intended to appear as night.
The VFX team had to replace the sky and balance colors through meticulous rotoscoping, isolating each element to control the lighting and create a seamless transition from day to night.
Bringing New Mexico to Utah in Horizon: An American Saga
Though the story is set in New Mexico, principal photography occurred in Utah, necessitating digital alterations to match the two landscapes.
The team carefully blended elements from New Mexico into the Utah scenery without making drastic changes to the terrain, striking a balance between authenticity and practicality.

Digital Crowds and Fiery Massacres in Horizon: An American Saga
The film required 30 crowd shots, which were digitally augmented with period-accurate extras.
A particularly challenging scene involved a town massacre, where the team had to add fire, crowds, and smoke without the benefit of bluescreens or proper lighting.
The lack of light made it difficult to create realistic fire effects, but the team meticulously relit each shot to achieve the desired result.
Complex Horse and Canyon Sequences
In one dramatic scene, a horse and rider tumble into a river. Initially, the team added a CG horse, but the stunt double’s reaction didn’t match the horse’s movements.
To fix this, they fully replaced both the horse and rider with digital versions, allowing full control over the sequence.
The canyon scene required similar attention, with the VFX team creating a dangerous, mud-slicked path for the horse to navigate, adding sticks, stones, and a mud simulation to enhance realism.
