This animation company was founded in 1923 by Walt Disney and his older brother Roy. At first, the two siblings began producing silent short cartoons in their small studio in Los Angeles, United States. Mickey Mouse short cartoons was the one that kickstarted the company’s reputation as an animation series on air nationwide. Mickey, thus, become the face of Walt Disney animation studio.

For Walt Disney, branching out into features at that time might have been very risky, but it was also an important progression compared to what the studio had done before. Regarding the technique to produce animation, Walt Disney studio’s short films had continued to push further their technical boundaries and proved their capabilities through some winning awards. The Silly Symphony piece, The Three Little Pigs both won an Oscar.

All of these facts led Walt Disney to start thinking about taking the leap into making full-length features. After a few false starts, such as adaptations of Alice In Wonderland, Walt Disney pushed ahead with producing the first animation feature of all time with Snow White.

“It took guts to do what Walt did,” animator Ollie Johnston recalled.

The major question was whether the audiences would pay to see almost 90 minutes of animation, with no real human being in sight? With the production cost of a quarter of million, whether the feature movie would break even?

Every stage of Snow White brought up either a new technical or storytelling challenge.

Statistically, Snow White required the work of up to 750 artists, including 32 animators, 25 background artists, 100 assistants. Not mention to the creation of thousands of drawings.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a risk that could have finished Walt Disney Animation Studio as well as the career of Disney. Instead it was the kind of risk that changed cinema and filmmaking forever. Can you imagine its success? Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs broke a new record of feature film, grossing $8 million in its first year. History recorded that Snow White was one of the most profitable film of all time. Though it’s very risky at first, Walt Disney Animation Studio was able to learn on it own how to find the balance between art and commerce.
