Toei Animation

Toei Animation is one of the top Japanese animation companies. The animation studio is well-known across the globe for a large number of works. They are largely recognized for producing iconic animation shows like Dragon Ball Z, One Piece and Sailor Moon.

It’s pretty much impossible to have grown up in the 90s without being influenced by one of Toei’s incredible cartoons. Dragon Ball isn’t the only show that bring this animation company the reputation. There are other show that become mega hit to worldwide audience, such as Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and One Piece.

Back to 1956, the animation studio started to produce animation for the Japanese. But their time to go known to the world of animation production only after English dubbed versions of many of their animation shows be added. The animation studio thus began making their way to the United States. Specifically, the Dragon Ball series was broadcast in the U.S. on Cartoon Network. Many of their shows such as  Sailor Moon, One Piece, Saint Seiya and Yu-Gi-Oh! have also be broadcasted as TV specials and theatrical films. Dragon Ball Z, the studio’s most successful franchise, got the main character, Goku, appeared to pop culture in Macy’s 2018 Thanksgiving Day parade.

Studio Ghibli is arguably one of the top Japanese film animation studios in the entire country, if not the world.

It’s also remarked to be the most loved anime studio in the world with many animation success such as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke. The fact is that out of the 15 top-grossing animation films made in Japan, eight of them have been credited to the work of studio Ghibli. Spirited Away, perhaps their most successful film to date, earned several awards including the nomation of Best Animated Feature Film in 2002 from Academy Awards. The studio also got four Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, an Animage Anime Grand Prix and numerous Academy Award nominations in the U.S.

Pierrot

Founded by a veteran of other renowned Japanese studios, Pierrot produced many popular animation series known across the globe. Being well-knowned for its popular “shōnen” style (meaning its work is primarily targeted at a young teen male and is stereotypically more about action, horror, and science-fiction), the Tokyo-based studio, Perriot, began by making cutting-edge anime films and series in the 1980s.

Perriot is founded in 1979 and by now have one of the prolific and distinguished catalogues in the anime game! The studio’s notable works include Naruto, Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, all of which are the most recognised manga series in the world. This studio have won the prestigious Animage Anime Grand Prix Award twice.

Oriental Light and Magic (OLM)

Founded in 1994, OLM, formerly known as Oriental Light and Magic, is just one Japanese production house that has grown in credibility over the years. OLM studio is known for one animation series above all the rest: Pokémon. The animated series Pokemon turned out to be the most valuable franchise in the United States and worldwide.

Pokémon started to shake the world after its U.S. introduction aired on the The WB. Many of the feature-length adaptations, including Pokémon: The First Movie and Pokémon: The Movie 2000, would also be handled by OLM. The studio is well-known for TV animation series based on a Nintendo game– Pokémon. The show began in 1997 and continues to date with more than 900 episodes.
