From complex setups to tricky post-processing, MoCap comes with challenges. But don’t worry because there are ways to simplify the process. Here’s what makes it hard and how you can make it easier!

However, with practice, affordable solutions, and proper training, it becomes manageable. The biggest challenge is the steep learning curve, but the results are rewarding and worth the effort.

Factors That Make Motion Capture Difficult

When I first started with motion capture, I expected it to be as simple as putting on a suit and recording movements. The reality, though, was much more complex. There were multiple challenges, including technical issues, skill requirements, cost barriers, and even acting difficulties.

  • Technical Challenges

One of the first struggles I faced was setting up the equipment properly. With optical systems, camera placement is critical, and I quickly realized that getting the right angles to avoid occlusion (where markers are blocked from the cameras) was harder than expected. 

Even after setup, tracking errors were common. Sometimes, the character’s movements in the software would glitch or jitter because a marker had fallen off or the system lost track of it.

Inertial systems (like Xsens or Rokoko) are more affordable, portable, and don’t require external cameras, making them great for smaller projects. 

If you’re on a budget, markerless MoCap (using an iPhone, Kinect, or AI-based tools) is a good starting point, though it may have limitations with accuracy and complex movements.

For my first few projects, I used a Kinect sensor, which was easy to set up but had tracking issues, especially with fast movements. Later, I upgraded to a Rokoko suit, which was much more reliable. If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend testing free or low-cost solutions before investing in professional gear.

If you’re capturing human performances, hiring or training a skilled motion capture performer can improve your results dramatically. I used to record my own movements, but when I worked with an actor, the animations looked way more natural.

Another trick is to use motion layers instead of fixing everything manually, you can apply adjustments on top of the existing animation. This saves time and prevents unnecessary re-recording.
