Until Amity, all homosexual Disney characters had their sexuality hinted rather than explicitly presented.

Critics have praised The Owl House. According to Common Sense Media’s Emily Ashby, who gave the show a 4 out of 5 star rating, the show’s quirky and endearing qualities came from combining many aspects. “The show is likely to be one you’ll want to watch with your older kids and tweens, allowing you the opportunity to address these kinds of themes when they come up,” the article continued.
According to LaughingPlace.com’s critic, “The performances fit together well as the variation in their delivery reflects the characters’ varied responsibilities in the Demon Realm.” The TV animation series has been lauded for its unique visuals and voice acting.
As Collider’s Dave Trumbore noted in his review, the TV animation series’ debut episode had “a dark, yet darkly humorous edge to it all.”
Evangelical Christian religious television network CBN noted about the show, saying it was part of a “witch agenda to make witchcraft look positive,”
Ben Bertoli’s review was more favourable: Terrace and those working on the project had created a fantasy world with likable characters.
