In June, Sony Pictures Animation announced that it would expand into animation series. Together with Sony Pictures Animation’s expansion, Sony’s showed its clear efforts to expand into kids’ content. According to an expert of streaming industry, kids shows have become one of the most important genres on main video and film streaming platforms and service providers.

Sony and the Silvergate acquisition deal

Silvergate, an independent media company founded in 2011 by William Astor and Waheed Alli, is known for its high-profile kids’ shows, including Netflix’s Hilda, Nick Jr.’s Sunny Day and underwater-set preschool series Octonauts.

China is one of the key market that Silvergate has had a range of licensees and broadcasting partners. Notably, Silvergate has a longstanding relationship with the public broadcaster CCTV, which co-produced the fifth season of Octonauts.

Thus, as part of the deal, Sony Pictures Television gets their responding share the joint venture that Silvergate had before with China’s Wanda Group. The joint venture includes the rights to Octonauts series’ broadcasting. Sony has also acquired a minority stake in Silvergate BP Bidco Limited, the company that produces the Peter Rabbit animated series.
